Library Additions

I acquired a couple of books recently and I am so happy to have these as original copies. The first is ‘William Cashen’s Manx Folklore‘ (1912). It’s a tiny, frail little thing, less than half an inch in thickness and only 5″ x 7″. Not a great tome at 77 pages yet a work of great dedication, full of wonderful information about how our ancestors lived and the essence of some of their beliefs.  You may recall a recent post I did on William Cashen…the guardian and custodian of Peel Castle who died there during the course of his work.

The second book, of similar size but hard backed, is one of poetry entitled ‘A Book of Manx Poetry‘ (1913). Arranged by William Cubbon it is also dedicated and signed by him and bears a dashing Edwardian-style Godred Crovan on the front cover which I remember seeing in infant school. William Cubbon is a particular favourite of mine as he’s the one who went into the bog to search for the Onchan Wonder Stone/Phallic Stone and found it!   He wrote the book ‘Island Heritage‘ which I have loved for many years.

So thank you to my family for the gifts of birthday money which I have thoroughly enjoyed spending.
